Valheim crossplay is not the same as cross-save

Joining a friend is different from moving your character

Crossplay describes playing together across supported platforms. Cross-save describes accessing the same save progress from another platform. The official FAQ supports the former broadly, but does not promise universal save synchronization.

It specifically says Xbox saves can be accessed on a PC when launching from the Microsoft Store. Beyond that, the FAQ does not offer cross-platform save sync. Buying the game on another storefront should not be treated as a guarantee that your character will appear there.

A pre-session checklist

• Confirm the game version and platform for each player.
• Agree on who hosts and when the world is available.
• Check the host’s current crossplay instructions and server settings.
• Keep an independent backup of important world saves.
• Share an equipment plan so the group can decide who brings which materials.

Hosting choices depend on your group

For an occasional session, availability while a friend is hosting may be enough. A dedicated server becomes useful when players need the world to remain available independently of one player’s schedule. That is a convenience decision, not a requirement imposed by this planning tool.
